Why Monero, and only Monero
The short answer is that every alternative introduces a record of who runs this site.
Payment processors require a legal entity, a bank account and identity verification. Card donations produce a merchant account with a real name attached. Most other cryptocurrencies write every transaction to a public ledger that can be traced back to an exchange account, and that exchange account was opened with a passport.
Monero's ledger does not expose sender, recipient or amount. That property is the whole reason it is used here — it lets this site be funded without creating the paper trail that anonymity is supposed to prevent. There is no second option, because a second option would defeat the first.
What the money does and doesn't do
It covers hosting, domain registration, and the occasional paywalled paper we need to read rather than take someone's word for.
It does not buy influence over a verdict, because there is no mechanism by which it could. Donations are not attributable to a person, so nobody can email us afterwards to point out how much they gave. That is an accident of the technology rather than a virtue on our part, but it is a genuinely useful accident for a site that grades things.
